COOPERATIVE EXTENSIONUNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIACALIFORNIA POULTRY LETTERAugust 1998In This Issue:
Dr. Wade Brant Receives Macdougall AwardDr. A. Wade Brant, Emeritus Extension Food Technologist, received the prestigious Macdougall Award at the recent 10th European Poultry Federation Meetings. Established in honour of the long and faithful service to World's Poultry Science Association (WPSA) of Major Ian Macdougall, the award is presented in the form of a gold medal. Since its establishment in 1962, the award has been presented only eight times. Dr. Brant was recognized for his outstanding service to both WPSA and the USA Branch of WPSA. He was a charter member of the USA Branch and served as Branch Secretary-Treasurer (1964-70), Vice President (1970-74), and President (1974-78). When the Branch hosted the XVth World's Poultry Congress in New Orleans in 1974, Dr. Brant chaired the Scientific Sessions. From 1978 through 1996 he was the Treasurer and Assistant Secretary of WPSA. Many of his international colleagues were at the recent Federation Meetings in Jerusalem. I was especially proud and pleased to see my fellow UCCE colleague honoured in this way. Bradley Positive Thoughts NeededAt this writing, Mr. Ed Olivera, Sr. has been in a coma for nearly a month. The long time and well liked egg producer has been in Intensive Care since suffering a stroke. Messages can be mailed to Olivera Foods, P.O. Box 32126, San Jose, California 95152-2126. Positive thoughts and support go out to Mr. Olivera and all his family. Francine A. Bradley Marlies Harris Named Agriculture Teacher of ExcellenceA recent issue of "California FFA News" reported on the selection of California's best agriculture teachers. Each year 11 teachers are selected from throughout California by their peers. Included in the class of recent winners was Modesto Junior College (MJC) faculty member Marlies Harris. This was the first year that the number of female recipients outnumbered the male recipients. Ms. Harris has a very active Poultry program at MJC, participates in the student activities of the Pacific Egg and Poultry Association, and is very supportive of both FFA and 4-H youth interested in Poultry. We salute the recipient, a UC Davis alumna and an outstanding Poultry instructor. Francine A. Bradley Translate Fond Memories into a Check for the FutureI have heard numerous members of our industries reminisce about their accomplishments as young exhibitors of poultry. Many is the interesting tale I heard about FFA egg laying contests, judging teams and grand champion market animals. The State Fair's Sale of Champions (Junior Poultry and Livestock) is fast approaching (Monday, August 24 at 8:00 p.m., Cal Expo). This year the Grand and Reserve Champion Chicken Meat Pens, Turkey Meat Pens and Grand Champion Dozen Eggs will be auctioned off. The numbers of buyers have been declining at State Fair. Several years ago I put together a Booster group called the "Supporters of Poultry Youth." for a minimum donation of $25.00 you can become a booster. I realize many of our Fresno area poultry meat producers generously support the auction at the Big Fresno Fair. John Voris does an excellent job of coordinating this effort. I would like to challenge the industry members in the rest of the state, including our egg producers, to support the State Fair Auction. Make checks payable to: "Supporters of Poultry Youth" and send to: Francine A. Bradley, Animal Science Department, University of California, Davis, CA 95616-8521. Francine A. Bradley Barbara Schneeman Resigns as DeanOn June 23rd, Barbara O. Schneeman, Dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at UC Davis, announced that she would be resigning as Dean effective June 30, 1999. During the upcoming year an interim administrative structure will be adopted for the Dean's office. Dean Schneeman will lead the planning effort for the new administrative structure. Also during the upcoming year, a national search will be conducted for a new dean.
