Trace Minerals for California Beef Cattle
University of California, Cooperative Extension
Glenn County Mineral Data
Selenium
Random samples from 10 herds in Glenn county (10 head from each herd) had an overall average whole blood selenium level of 0.059 ppm. This is consistent with adequate to marginal selenium levels. Due to individual animal variation, it is likely some individuals were selenium deficient. Therefore selenium levels in Glenn county are generally adequate but due to individual variation, testing at specific locations is recommended.
Copper
The same random samples (5 head from each herd) had serum copper levels of 0.45 ppm. This is consistent with marginal status for copper. The interaction with other minerals and individual animal variation will determine the potential for copper deficiency at specific locations. Therefore, individual testing at specific locations is recommended.
Zinc
Samples (n=51) submitted to the California Veterinary Diagnostic Lab averaged 1.31 ppm serum Zn which indicates adequate levels. Additional samples would increase the reliability of an adequate status for Zn.
Phosphorus
Insufficient data are available for conclusions.
