Trace Minerals for California Beef Cattle

University of California, Cooperative Extension

Nevada County Mineral Data

Selenium

Four herds (total of 40 head) were randomly sampled for selenium levels. The overall whole blood selenium level was 0.0462 ppm, which is generally considered deficient or marginal. Deficiency is considered less than 0.04 ppm. Individual animal and location differences may result in deficiency in some cattle. Therefore, testing at individual locations would better define specific conditions.

Copper

Four herds (total of 20 head) had an overall serum copper average of 0.858 ppm, which is considered adequate for copper. The interaction with other minerals and individual animal variation will determine the potential for copper deficiency at specific locations. Therefore, individual testing at specific locations is recommended.

Zinc

Limited class 3 data suggests Zn is adequate but, additional testing is needed.

Phosphorus

Insufficient data are available for conclusions.
