Trace Minerals for California Beef Cattle
University of California, Cooperative Extension
Stanislaus County Mineral Data
Selenium
Stanislaus County is selenium deficient. The average whole blood Se value was 0.050 ppm from 223 samples. When samples are selected randomly from the county's cattle population, which is a better sampling method for estimating population status, the average is 0.027 ppm. Numerous samples have been reported below 0.01 ppm which is extremely low. Supplementation is suggested when deficiency occurs.
Copper
Class 3 serum data suggests adequate Cu levels. The large variation in liver sample values suggests some cattle may be Cu deficient. Further testing is needed.
Zinc
Limited class 3 data suggests adequate Zn levels.
