Trace Minerals for California Beef Cattle
University of California, Cooperative Extension
Tulare County Mineral Data
Selenium
Samples from the California Veterinary Diagnostic Lab (CVDL) had an average whole blood Se level of 0.059 ppm (SD 0.058) indicating Se deficiency. The wide variation suggests further testing is needed to identify specific areas of Se deficiency.
Copper
Serum Cu levels from samples at the CVDL averaged 0.63 ppm (SD 0.20) suggesting Cu deficiency. Liver samples from the CVDL more strongly indicate Cu deficiency with 52 samples averaging 117 ppm (SD 193). Liver samples at or below 100 ppm are considered frankly deficient. The wide variation again suggests variation across the county. Further testing is recommended.
Zinc
Zinc is probably adequate with samples from the CVDL averaging 1.34 ppm (SD 0.92). However, due to the large variation there is potential for Zn deficiency. Further testing is needed.
Phosphorus
Insufficient Data.
