  Assistant Professor of Animal Population/Quantitative Genomicist/Geneticist, Department of Animal Science, University of California, Davis

Title: Assistant Professor of Animal Population/Quantitative Genomicist/Geneticist in Animal Science with teaching, research, outreach and service responsibilities. The appointment is in the Department of Animal Science in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and is an academic year (9-month) tenure track assistant professor position which includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and outreach of relevance to the California Agricultural Experiment Station (http://caes.ucdavis.edu/research/agexpstn).

The research, teaching and outreach mission of the Department of Animal Science (http://animalscience.ucdavis.edu) focuses on the creation, development and distribution of basic and applied knowledge related to the biology and production of domestic animals, with a scope extending from the molecular to the ecosystem levels. Faculty and specialist programs within the department concentrate on domesticated farm animals but include non-domesticated, wild, laboratory, and companion animal species. Fields of study within the department include animal behavior, animal systems modeling, animal welfare, aquaculture, comparative endocrinology, conservation biology, ecology, genetics and genomics, lactation, management, nutrition, physiology, production, reproduction, stress, and toxicology.

The appointee will have access to wide-ranging animal and infrastructure resources and many collaborative opportunities within the department and college, and with colleagues in campus units such as the School of Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, California National Primate Research Center and College of Biological Sciences.

Responsibilities: The Department of Animal Science is seeking applicants who utilize genomic analyses to characterize traits that impact animal productivity, welfare, or animals in their environment. The research focus may include experimental, theoretical, computational, and applied approaches to quantitative genetics and genomics, population genetics, and genetic-genomic evaluation and selection. The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program in population/quantitative genetics to address critical or emerging issues in animal agriculture or animal science. The appointee will be responsible for teaching an undergraduate course in quantitative and population genetics of domestic animals, as well as other courses assigned to meet the teaching needs of departmental curricula. Mentoring of graduate students, undergraduate student advising, curricular development, participation in and development of outreach programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. The appointee is expected to conduct fundamental research, train students, and provide outreach that will ultimately support the economic viability of California’s animal industries and yield both basic biological mechanisms and translatable outcomes.

Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Population Genetics, Quantitative Genetics, Animal Breeding, or a closely-related field. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. Research interests focused on Population or Quantitative Genetics of domestic, feral, or wild animals relevant to animal agriculture is preferred. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in population/quantitative genetics/genomics.

Salary: Commensurate with experience within the Assistant Professor rank at the University of California.
