Frequently Asked Questions about the Parrot Outreach Club (POC)

What is the POC?

The POC is the Parrot Outreach Club at UC Davis. We are a student organization dedicated to the education of the public about the concerns of captive and wild parrots. We strive to illustrate the complexities and responsibilities of parrot ownership.

Who Participates in the POC?

The POC is composed of UC Davis students and alumni. Most of us have a strong background in avian sciences and research and have lived with parrots for several years. The live parrots that accompany us are our own birds.

How long do parrots live?

Most of the larger parrots can live from 40 to 80 years with proper healthcare and nutrition. This is a much longer life span than any other commonly kept household animal.

How intelligent are parrots?

According to Irene Peperberg, researcher in parrot cognizance, "These birds have the emotional and social skills of about a 2-and-a-half year-old, 3-year-old child. Their intellectual skills are more like a 5 or 6 year old in some cases."

Where can I get more information on parrots?

Where can I get a parrot?

The POC is a club attempting to educate the public about the realities of owning a parrot. Purchasing a parrot is not a commitment to be entered into lightly. We are concerned about the growing number of parrots who have been abandoned because their owners did not realize the time, energy, money and patience needed to have a happy parrot. Our purpose is not to promote the acquisition of a parrot without much thought and planning.

How can I get in touch with the POC?
