Department News and Updates! October 13, 2017


  • Rachel Conway organized the first annual Goat Al Clinic at the Goat Facility on September 30th. There was a great turnout and there is already a waitlist for next year!
  • "CTR DAIRY" was released. It is the only simulation program in the world that evaluates within-day feeding strategies of grazing dairy cows to determine how changing those feeding strategies impacts dairy profitability. CTR Dairy was developed by Dr.’s Peter Robinson and Abbas Ahmadi in close cooperation with Dr. Pablo Chilibroste and his student Francisco Elizondo of the University of Uruguay in Paysandú.
  • Allen Pettey’s recent presentation at the California Wool Growers’ Association annual convention, entitled “Sheep Nutrition – Influences on Productivity and Health” was featured in an article in the current issue of The Banner Sheep Magazine, a national publication for purebred sheep enthusiasts.


  • Erin Flynn and Anne Todgham published “Thermal windows and metabolic performance curves in a developing Antarctic fish” in the Journal of Comparative Physiology B.
  • Michelle Halstead and Pablo J. Ross are co-authors of “Transcriptome profiling of individual rhesus macaque oocytes and preimplantation embryos” in Biology of Reproduction.


  • Alison Van Eenennaam participated in a weeklong meeting in Irvine, CA as a member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine Study Committee for “Science Breakthroughs 2030: A Strategy for Food and Agricultural Research”. She also was the featured scientist in the Eureka! Show, a science/comedy fusion show in San Francisco hosted by Allen Saakyan, in partnership with SynBioBeta.
  • Francine Bradley attended the XXV Congreso Latinoamericano de Avicultura in Guadalajara where she spoke at the World's Poultry Science Association.
  • Joy Mench was the keynote speaker at the 3rd International Symposium on Zoo Animal Welfare, held at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.
  • Allen Pettey and undergraduate students served as judges for the professional sheep shearing competition at the Dixon Lambtown Festival on October 7th.
