PREVIOUS YEARS' PICS
BIRDS!

Summer 2006 |
| California State Fair |
|
| They call it “Big Fun” and that’s exactly what visitors to
the UC Davis Hatchery Exhibit had this year at the
California
State Fair. Fairgoers were awed as baby Quail and Chickens
hatched right in front of their very eyes. The little ducklings
sure put on a show too! |
 |
| Executive Committee Meetings |
|
| Newly elected officials meet over the summer showing their devotion to the
Club and its success. They figured, the more they get done over the summer, the smoother the rest of the year will be for the
Club. |

| Cosumnes River Preserve Nature Walk |
|
|
What better way to kick off the new year than with a nature walk! That's exactly what these members did, with the added bonus of receiving a guided tour by volunteer naturalist Steve McClellan, who has hiked the
Cosumnes
River Preserve for 10 years. Through slough wetlands, oak forests, and open savannahs, we sighted many birds including large flocks of migrating Sandhill Cranes. |

Sacramento
Zoo Gardening Adventure at
Lake Victoria
|
|
|
This weekend members decided to “give back” by volunteering to cut overgrown bushes and trees in the Sac Zoos' waterfowl attraction,
Lake Victoria
. Valerie Schneider met us at the front gate and took us on a little tour of the Zoo before our shift. She then took us behind the scenes and introduced us to Susan Healy for an up close encounter with a 2 month old Thick-billed Parrot raised by Susan and 2 baby
Flamingos! Next we hooked up with Jason who’s in charge of the birds on exhibit. He gave us all the tools needed and got us set up in the lake area. Jason accompanied us for much of the time, and told us neat stories and made our work fun. Thanks so much Valerie, Susan, and Jason for making our experience at the Sacramento Zoo so wonderful!

Activities Fair and Bake Sale 2006
|
|
|
Each year SPAC (the Student Programs and Activities Center) gives student organizations the opportunity to make their name known to the student body, as well as earn revenue through the sale of baked goods and
Club paraphernalia. AVS Club members represented our
Club by advertising the then upcoming GGRO trip, and selling yummie cupcakes, brownies, cookies, deviled eggs, and also AVS
Club t-shirts. |

Golden Gate Raptor Observatory
|
|
|
Situated in the Marin Headlands,
GGRO's Hawk Hill is the perfect spot from August through December to see migrating raptors. GGRO Volunteer Maggie Edwards kindly forfeited her day off to accompany us on our search for raptors. Unfortunately, Nov. 4 was a foggy day, so we did not spend long on the Hill. Instead, Maggie led us on a long hike throughout the area rich with songbirds, and a tour of the GGRO Stewardship Site. |

Pacific Poultry Breeder's
Association Show |
|
|
The
annual
Pacific Poultry Breeder's Association Show gives poultry fanciers the
opportunity to show their birds, and enter
judging competitions. Our Club Advisor, Dr.
Francine Bradley, is a showmanship judge for
this event. We participated by operating
this industrially equipped kitchen at the
fairgrounds, and serving up a warm breakfast
and lunch menu. It was hard work, great fun,
and the revenue generated will support
future Club events. |

California Raptor Center |
|
|
The
California Raptor
Center, located in the city of Davis,
rehabilitates and houses sick and injured
raptors. The center, run by the UCD
School of Veterinary Medicine, takes in 250
raptors each year and is able to release 60%
of those birds. Members visited the
center and were guided by a staff member who
introduced them to the birds and the work
accomplished by the center. It was a
wonderful experience, and at the end of the
visit the club adopted one of the residents,
a Turkey Vulture named Balzac. |

Picnic Day |
|
|
Each spring, UCD comes
alive with
Picnic Day, the largest
student-run event in the nation, boasting
over 50,000 visitors. This year, the Avian
Sciences Club members sold t-shirts, and
staffed the Poultry Extension’s hatchery
exhibit at Meyer Hall. |

BIRDATHON 2007 |
|
|
Shelley, Yolie, Emily,
Angela, Liz, Johanna, Larissa, and Kylise
(from the Wildlife Society) gathered very
early on Sunday April 29 to participate in
BIRDATHON 2007. This annual spring
fundraiser for the
Yolo Audubon Society (YAS)
combines a day of fun-filled bird-watching
with conservation. Our many generous
supporters pledged to donate funds to YAS
based on either a flat amount or per species
identified on this one
day. We counted 67 different species, with a
total contribution of almost $300 to YAS
that will be used to support their
educational programs for elementary school
kids and local conservation programs. Thanks
to all for making this event a success for
us, and for local birds and their habitats! |

Zoo “Wings of Spring” Celebration |
|
|
In honor of
International Migratory Bird Day,
the
Sacramento Zoo
sponsored “Wings of Spring” on May 5th.
Our friend at the Zoo, Valerie Schneider,
kindly admitted members of the AVS Club free
of charge on this special day! In addition
to viewing the birds and other animals, we
visited with the many local birding groups,
companion parrot clubs, and wildlife
organizations on hand. It was wonderful to
be a part of this large turnout of local
birding enthusiasts and conservationists! |
