Project: The behavior and welfare of captive wild animals
- My primary interest is in studying the behavior of wild animals in
captivity with the goal of determining the appropriateness of the
captive environment.
My research at UCD will be focused on the behavior of captive
Orange-wing Amazon parrots. I am interested in the performance of
stereotypic behaviors; their development, their prevention, and
their connection with animal welfare. The goals of my research are
as follows:
- Develop a schema by which currently stereotyping animals may
be classified according to the types and intensities of
stereotypies displayed.
- Determine, through corticosterone measurements, if differences
in stress physiology may be correlated with differences in the
degree to which stereotyped behaviors are displayed between
parrots in identical environments.
- Follow the development of stereotypic behavior through the
continuum from pre- to developed behavior.
- Develop therapeutic and prophylactic environmental
manipulations which will reduce the incidence and the intensity
of stereotyped behavior.
I invite anyone with questions or similar interests to contact me
by e-mail.
