Projects

Effect of diet on nutrient excretion and air emissions of VOC, methane, and ammonia by dry and lactating dairy cows.

The objectives of this study are to determine the effect of typical California diets fed to dry and lactating dairy cows on nutrient mass balance of C, N, and S, as well as air emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC), ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and methane from the cows and their excreta under controlled conditions using environmental chambers.

Effect of environmental management techniques on performance, nutrient flow, and physiology of heat-stressed Holstein heifers

The objectives of this study are to compare the effects of shade, water sprinkling, and stocking density on  1) heat stress reduction in Holstein heifers housed in dry lot pens, and 2) on nutrient flow (nutrient mass balance study).
