Background
I am looking forward to starting my Ph.D in the animal
biology department under the guidance of Cassandra Tucker in the fall of
2010, focusing on dairy cattle welfare. As a veterinary student, I became
increasingly interested in the welfare of food-producing species, and the
role that veterinarians have to play in improving the welfare of these
animals. Some of the issues that I am curious about include the validation
of indices which may be used to measure cow and calf welfare, the use of
automated health monitoring devices to aid in the detection of subclinical
disease (and subsequent pain/discomfort) and the role of facility design and
husbandry in stress and pain reduction.
