Research Interests

Breed Improvement of Fish for Aquaculture: Current projects involve genetic improvement of coho salmon farmed in Chile and the development of a new strain of tilapia based on species crosses.

The coho salmon project is cooperative with colleagues in at the University of Chile and is directed at selection for improved growth rate, advanced spawning season, and high meat quality, using standard selection methods and animal model estimates of breeding values as selection criteria.

The tilapia project produced four-way crosses from four species of tilapia, in cooperation with colleagues at the Agricultural Research Organization in Israel. Crosses were utilized to identify species specific DNA markers, prepare a genomic map of tilapia and search for quantitative trait loci.
