There are three ways to access our ftp
site: The first method is using a
generic web browser, the second method
is using the
Microsoft Explorer 7, and the
third
method is using the ftp program Absolute-FTP.
Method 1 - Using a
Generic web Browser
This method works for downloading
files, but not for uploading files. It
uses the http protocol to access a FTP
site, bypassing the firewall
restrictions:
- Point your web browser to:
http://animalscience.ucdavis.edu/ftp/
the ftp site appears.
- Navigate to the desired folder.
- If the folder is password
protected, a logon dialog box
appears. If the folder is public,
the logon dialog box does not
appear.
- Right click on a file. A menu
appears. Choose the “Save Target
As” option. A dialog box
appears.
- Save the file onto your
computer.
Method 2 - Using Microsoft Explorer

How to logon
- Point your browser to:
ftp://animalscience.ucdavis.edu/
The ftp root appears:
- Click on the “Page” icon.
A submenu appears. Choose the “Open
FTP site in Windows Explorer”
option. the ftp site will open in
the Windows Explorer.
- From the File menu,
choose the “Login As” option.
A dialog box appears.
- You can either logon anonymously
or by using a username and password.
- Click the “Log On” button. The ftp
site re-appears.
How to upload files
- Logon to the ftp site.
- Navigate to the specified
folder.
- Drag and drops files from
Windows Explore onto your FTP site.
How to download files
- Logon to the ftp site.
- Navigate to the specified
folder.
- Right click on a file. A menu
appears. Choose the “Save Target
As” option. A dialog box
appears.
- Save the file onto your
computer.
Method 3 - Using Absolute-FTP
program
How to install?
- Download and install the
Absolute-FTP program by clicking on
the following link:
http://animalscience.ucdavis.edu/ftp/FTPSoftware/AbsFTP1-9.exe
How to run for the first time?
- Click start. Point to All
Programs. Point to the UC Davis
Internet Tools. Click on the
Absolute FTP. The Connect dialog box
appears. If this is the first time,
click the Close button.
- From the File menu choose the
Quick Connect option. A dialog box
appears. Enter the following
information in this dialog box:
Hostname:
animalscience.ucdavis.edu
Port: 21
Anonymous login: Unchecked
Username: Enter the
assigned username
Password: Enter the
assigned password
Initial directory:
Leave blank
Save Session: This check
box should be checked
- Click the OK button.
You should see two windows: one
showing the ftp site and the other
showing your computer files and folders.
If not, from the Windows menu, choose
the "Tile Vertically" option.
Now you can copy files between your
computer and your ftp site, by dragging
and dropping files between these two
windows.
Problems Accessing FTP
Site
The main problems with FTP access are
Windows firewall
and
Passive ftp.
To turn off the Windows firewall and to
uncheck the Passive FTP feature,
please follow these instructions:
A. How to turn off Windows
Firewall?
- Click the Start button and then choose the
Control Panel.
- Scroll down and click the
Windows Firewall icon.
- Turn off the Windows firewall.

B. How to uncheck the Passive FTP
Feature in Absolute-FTP?
- Click the Start button and point to
All
Programs. Point to the UC Davis
Internet Tools. Click on the
Absolute FTP. The Connect
dialog box
appears.
- Highlight the entry for our ftp
site and right click on the
highlighted entry. A menu appears.
- Choose the Properties option. A
dialog box appears.
- Highlight the FTP entry in the
dialog box and uncheck the box for
"Use outgoing data
connections (PASV)"

- Click the OK button. The Connect
dialog box reappears. Click OK again
and you will be connected to our FTP
site.
C. How to uncheck the Passive FTP
Feature in Microsoft browser?
- In the Microsoft browser, from the Tools menu,
choose the Internet Options.
A dialog box appears.
- Click the Advanced tab.
A list appears. Scroll down and
highlight the "Use Passive FTP
(for firewall and DSL modem
compatibility)" entry.
- Uncheck the box for this option.

- Click OK button.
