James Oltjen is Recipient of The 1997 Extension Award

The Western Section of the American Society of Animal Science selected Dr. James Oltjen, Associate Livestock Systems Management Specialist, Department of Animal Science, as the recipient of the 1997 Extension Award. The award, presented annually to a member of the society actively engaged in extension and employed by a western region institution, recognizes outstanding achievements in animal science extension programs.

Oltjen is recognized as an international leader in applying mathematical models and computer techniques on farms and ranches. He stresses the need to integrate disciplinary knowledge, economic considerations and practical experience into research and extension programs. His efforts are primarily in animal enterprise management, natural resource monitoring and modeling, and livestock quality assurance programs with simultaneous computer decision aid development.
