A number of prospective students, alumni and friends of the department have asked about the availability of scholarships for undergraduates in the Animal Science majors. The list below describes the scholarships and awards offered for the 1997-98 Academic Year and the students that received these scholarships at our Annual Department BBQ on June 5th. Awards ranged from $500 to $1,800. Carl L. Garrison Scholarship - Stacy M. Pettigrew (Atwater, CA). Carl Garrison was a prominent rancher and alumnus of UC Davis. He was a past president of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association as well as the California Beef Council. Carl's friends and family established an endowment fund in his memory in 1975, which supports this scholarship. It is given to a junior or senior who is planning a career in livestock production. Elizabeth Graves Hosselkus Scholarship - T'Nay L. Kawcak (Altaville, CA) and Cassandra B. Tucker (Oceanside, CA). Elizabeth Graves Hosselkus graduated with a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1925. Later she was employed by the Department of Animal Husbandry. This scholarship, in her memory, was established by her husband. It is awarded annually to students majoring in Animal Science. Harold and Elizabeth Kendall Scholarship - Sally Pyle (Susanville, CA). Harold was a student at UCD in the early 1920's. He majored in Animal Husbandry because, he says, he wanted to be a cowboy. When he graduated, however, he found a job in the avocado industry. After attending Harvard and acquiring a MBA, he moved to Florida and built a career in the citrus and subtropical fruit industries. Elizabeth Kendall graduated around the same time from UC Berkeley in Chemistry. This scholarship is presented to a new or continuing undergraduate student with an Animal Science major. In addition to academic excellence, preference is given to students demonstrating leadership skills as in extracurricular activities. It is being offered for the first time this year. Robert C. Laben Scholarship - Shelly Wright (Salinas, CA). Robert "Bob" laben was Master Advisor for the Animal Science major for about 15 years. His "open door" policy and rapport with students earned him wide respect from students and colleagues through the college. Currently a professor emeritus, Bob remains active on several department committees. This scholarship is presented to a new or continuing undergraduate student with an Animal Science Major. In addition to academic excellence, preference is give to students demonstrating leadership skills in extracurricular activities. It is being offered for the first time this year. Clement and Jeanne Pelissier Scholarship - Ryan Brenner (Modesto, CA). "Clem" Pelissier was Extension Dairy Specialist at UCD for 32 years (1950-82). He was well known for his in-depth knowledge of diary management and the California dairy industry, and for his strong support for UCD and its students and alumni. This scholarship is presented to a continuing undergraduate student majoring in Animal Science. Preference is given to students with an interest in dairy cattle who have demonstrated leadership skills (which may include athletics). Greta Breedlove Ross Scholarship - Staci Murguia (Whittier, CA). Greta Breedlove Ross and her husband, Robert Wiley Ross were killed in a tragic accident several months after their wedding in 1985. At the time of their death, Robert was completing work on his master's degree in Civil Engineering and Greta was completing her Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science. This scholarship was created by their parents, family and friends to commemorate their memory and their relationship with UC Davis. It is given to a senior undergraduate, who is studying Animal Science and interested in animal genetics or related fields. California Cattlewomen's Scholarship - Julie Allwardt (Salinas, CA). The California Cattlewomen are the women's auxiliary of the California Cattleman's Association. They have offered this scholarship since 1972. The recipient must be a graduate of a California high school and studying in a beef-related field. Tom Mead Dairy Award - Christing Aguiar (Livingston, CA) and Betsey Martin (Petaluma, CA). World-Wide Sires Inc. is the donor of this award to commemorate Tom Mead, a professor of Animal Science at UCD who retired in 1962. This award is given to a junior or senior who demonstrates a high and continuing interest in dairy cattle. Oskar Lang Laboratory Animal Science Award - Dorothy Bermudez (Santa Cruz, CA). This award, in memory of Oskar Lang, is given to an Animal Science undergraduate or graduate student interested in laboratory animal management.
