Cattlemen Get Briefed on Genetic Selection

Over 50 California cattlemen met at the Department of Animal Science Cole Facility on April 3, 1997 to learn how to produce and market superior beef animals through genetic selection. The program, and advanced training module of the Cow-Calf Quality Assurance Program developed jointly by UC Cooperative Extension and the California Cattlemen's Association and co-sponsored by the California Beef Cattle Improvement Association and G Bar Angus, included presentations by UC Cooperative Extension, California State University and industry personnel. Topics covered included "Supplying a Genetically Superior Beef Product", "Bull Selection and the Individual Cow-Calf Operation", "Finding Out What's Underneath the Hide Using Ultrasound", "Consumer Taste Panel for Beef" and "Value-based Marketing Alternatives for Seedstock Producers". Specialist Jim Oltjen organized the event and was assisted by Dan Sehnert, Dan Kominek and Ted Mori.
