Granville Hutton was born and raised on a family dairy farm in Kirk, Colorado. He credited the strong influence of Extension for improving the quality of life his family enjoyed during hard times. Granville earned his BS in Animal Science at Colorado State University. After spending four years in the United States Navy he became an Extension agent in Boulder County, Rio Blanco, and Meeker, Colorado.

The Hutton family moved to California where, in 1955, Granny became 4-H Advisor in Shasta County then transferred to San Joaquin County in 1958. He earned his Masters degree in Animal Husbandry at UC Davis in the mid 60's. In 1968 he became Dairy Farm Advisor serving the dairy farmers in San Joaquin County until his retirement in August of 1989.

Granville loved his work. Folks say, "No one could do it better or enjoy it more." He was an excellent scientist and teacher, and a reliable source of research-based information that helped dairymen in the State and the Nation. He conducted many research projects in cooperation with other Farm Advisors and Dairy Specialists.

He was instrumental in developing basic concepts in milking equipment design and engineering, published information on line sizes, vacuum and wash-up requirements, and other engineering research, and was an expert on least-cost rations and pond design.

Granville received many honors for his work. The Granville Hutton Milk Parlor was dedicated at the San Joaquin County Fair in July, 1991. It will serve as an excellent education facility and provide exhibitors with an improved environment to milk their cows. It is a fitting tribute to a man who will be remembered for his dedication and contributions to dairy education and practical research.
