The Denicol lab in the Department of Animal Science at the University of California, Davis is currently seeking for a qualified and motivated Junior Specialist, 43% time for a period of 12 months, renewable based on performance.
This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in animal reproduction with emphasis on stem cell and gamete biology (oogenesis/folliculogenesis), and embryology. The successful candidate will participate in research projects in the laboratory and at the farm. The successful candidate will also be expected and encouraged to be significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results; to participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations, presenting data at lab meetings, department seminars or annual conferences, and publishing manuscripts. General responsibilities include: laboratory maintenance, including safety data sheets and chemical inventory, and ordering of supplies; conduct of research in the laboratory; data collection in an organized manner, and basic data analysis; and support in farm research projects. The Junior Specialist will work closely with the PI and have regular meetings to discuss laboratory and research topics and plan activities. The ideal candidate will be a motivated individual; have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
- Bachelor degree in Animal Science or a related field [with a minimum of 1 year experience in laboratory research].
- Skills in molecular biology; knowledge on PCR and real-time PCR, nucleic acid isolation and handling; gel electrophoresis; primer design and optimization.
- Skills in cell biology; knowledge of cell culture and aseptic technique.
- Ability to utilize Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint); input and basic analysis of data on Excel.
- Ability to order supplies and maintain laboratory;
- Motivation to learn and perform laboratory as well as basic farm research activities. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Background knowledge in animal reproduction and/or embryology;
- Experience handling cattle and other livestock species. SALARY RANGE: Step I - $37,548 [100% annual] or Step II - $40,044 [100% annual]), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
POSITION AVAILABLE/CLOSING DATE: As openings occur, appointments are made contingent upon
availability of funding. The posting will remain open until December 31, 2016 to accommodate department needs.
