Description

The Hess Lab in the Department of Animal Science at the University of California, Davis seeks applications for a Junior Specialist at 100% with a start date in mid to late Spring 2016. The position is initially for 6-months with potential of extension based on performance.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The candidate will have the opportunity to mine large omics data sets for novel enzymes and to study identified enzymes in more detail. Of particular interest is the effect of the new enzymes on gut and host health as well as their potential for reducing greenhouse gas emission and increasing efficiency of the conversion of plant material into biofuel and bioproduct precursors. The candidate will have the opportunity to design and synthesize novel enzymes and test their effect on in-situ and in-vitro systems. This project will provide the candidate with the opportunity to work at the intersection of Systems Microbiology and Biological Systems Engineering and contribute significantly to the health of animals, humans and environment. Junior Specialist will be involved in publishable research activities and engaged in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team
The Junior Specialist will report to Dr. Hess and will collaborate closely with the postdoctoral scholars, graduate and undergraduate students in the lab. The Junior Specialist will be performing experiments, optimizing experimental methods, analyzing and screening experimental results, and preparing resulting data for publication. The results provided by the Junior Specialist will facilitate the completion of a larger number of experimental projects conducted in the Hess Lab. The incumbent will also assume responsibility for ordering supplies and assisting with other aspects of lab management as needed.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• The minimum qualification required to be considered for the position is a bachelor’s or equivalent in Microbiology, Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field by time of application. A master’s degree in these or related areas is a plus.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience with recombinant protein expression in E. coil and/or B. subtilis
• Experience with recombinant protein purification using FPLC in combination with affinity, ion exchange, or size-exclusion chromatography columns
• Experience with DNA manipulation techniques, including PCR, ligation, restriction digest, and site directed mutagenesis
• Experience with analysis of 16S rRNA profiles
• Experience with GC analysis
• Familiarity with typical laboratory supplies and reagents
• Familiarity with or experience in an academic research environment
• Familiarity with standard software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Familiarity with data analysis

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience with bioreactors and QIIME.
• Experience with analysis of metagenome data.

RANK: Junior Specialist I
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Based on UC Davis pay scale.
