Position Description for Junior Specialist
The Horback lab in the Department of Animal Science at the University of California, Davis is currently seeking a Junior Specialist (80% time for duration of 20 months).
This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in animal behavior, cognition and welfare. General responsibilities include: laboratory support (maintaining computer lab, organizing supplies), animal trial support (setting up/cleaning experiment trials, moving animals, video record experimental trials), data management (organizing and cataloging video files, datasheets), and data collection (code videos for specific behaviors). The junior specialist will be actively and significantly involved in reviewing journal articles, engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results, participating in appropriate professional societies or groups and other educational and research organizations, presenting research data in lab meetings or at society annual conferences, and potentially at publishing manuscripts. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
• Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Biology, Animal Science or a related field.
• Ability to schedule experiments, organize supplies, and maintain cleanliness of equipment, experiment rooms, and lab space.
• Ability to safely handle and move large farm animals (swine, sheep).
• Knowledge and skills working with Microsoft suite (Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint).
• Operant conditioning techniques/animal training.
• Recording live or video-based animal behavior data.
• Knowledge of behavior data sampling techniques (scan, instantaneous, etc.).
SALARY RANGE: Step I - $37,548 [100% annual], commensurate with qualifications and experience.
