POSITION DESCRIPTION:
This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in ecology, genetics, and conservation. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

Research

The Junior Specialist will be required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities. This will be achieved through general and specific responsibilities. Generally, their role and duty in publishable research activities includes participating in field and laboratory studies, and laboratory support (maintaining lab, organizing lab, and lab supply ordering). Specific responsibilities in publishable research activities include: molecular bench work (DNA extractions, maintaining strict environmental DNA clean techniques, PCR set up, RAD-sequencing library preparation, gel electrophoresis, DNA quantification, and microsatellite and SNP genotyping), and data management.

The Junior Specialist will not be required to assist the PI in study design, but will be required to collect and interpret data, specifically RAD-sequencing library preparation, microsatellite data collection and scoring, and parentage analysis.

The Junior Specialist will be required to contribute to scholarly manuscripts through reviewing and commenting on draft manuscripts, literature searches, data collection and scoring, and helping to write methods sections. Specifically the Junior Specialist will review and conduct peer reviewed literature searches relevant to scientific activities in the lab.

Professional Competence

If appropriate (e.g. the Junior Specialist is involved in a project and desires to do so), the Junior Specialist may present work at a scientific or scholarly conference, for example American Fisheries Society. If interested, the Junior Specialist may participate in professional/technical societies, either to present research or as an attendant. A professional/technical society may include the IEP Resident Fishes Project Work Team.

University and Public Service

The Junior Specialist will participate in training activities, such as mentoring high school and undergraduate interns and training them in molecular lab work and data analysis.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field
• Ability to maintain chemical inventories and laboratory safety data sheets.
• Ability to work outside in inclement weather
• Skills following research sampling protocol to handle and transport samples, and maintain records from sampling events and laboratory analyses.
• Knowledge and skills working with Microsoft suite (Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint) for information outreach, data management and summation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ability to perform bench work for microsatellite genotyping including DNA extractions, PCR, use of an ABI 3730
• Knowledge and skills using laboratory software including GeneMapper, CERVUS, and PMx
• Experience using the Fluidigm platform for SNP genotyping and data analysis
• Experience supervising and training high school or undergraduate interns
• Ability to prepare RADseq libraries for sequencing
• Ability to maintain laboratory equipment including ABI3730, Fluidigm equipment (Biomark, EP1, IFC controllers), centrifuges, thermocyclers, and incubators.

SALARY RANGE: Step I- $18.26 hourly or Step II - $19.48 hourly, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

POSITION AVAILABLE/CLOSING DATE: As openings occur, appointments are made contingent upon availability of funding. For full consideration, completed applications must be submitted by August 25, 2017. TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Short term, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
