Research
My
research is in the area of applied animal behavior and
welfare, specifically that of poultry. Currently, my
research is focused on the effects of lighting during
incubation on post-hatch behavior and health in broiler
chickens. I am also interested the affects of numerous
factors, such as genetics, nutrition, and environmental
conditions, on behavior and welfare. Understanding the
affects of environmental factors as well as genetics can aid
in the ability to better manage livestock and to optimized
health and minimize fear and stress during production.
Recent studies include natural nesting behavior in hens,
effects of lighted incubation, behavior and fear response of
hens during a molt, and differential fear response in
different genetic lines of chicken.
