Research
My research is focused on studying the genetic characteristics of fish to
benefit threatened species and the aquaculture community. My primary project
is to identify genes or markers associated with whirling disease resistance
in rainbow trout using both gene expression and linkage mapping approaches.
The overall goal of this project is to enable marker assisted selection for
aquaculture strains and genetic screening of wild populations to reduce the
spread and magnitude of whirling disease outbreaks. In addition to whirling
disease research, I collaborate with Joshua Israel and Molly Stephens on a
project to genetically assess and monitor salmonid species (Chinook salmon
and rainbow trout) in the San Joaquin River to aid in the long-term
restoration of these extirpated species.
