UC Davis Reproductive Biology

This logo was first used in 1984 for the symposium The Molecular and Cellular Biology of Fertilization. This 75th Anniversary Symposium was organized in celebration of the founding of the UC Davis campus. The logo depicts the fertilizin/anti-fertilizin hypothesis for sperm-egg jelly agglutination proposed by F.R. Lillie in 1914, as portrayed by Lord Rothchild in 1951. In creating the logo, antibody molecules were added to the fertilizin symbols to acknowledge the strong influence of immunological reactions (antibody-antigen) to the development of Lillie’s hypothesis, and to reflect contemporary research on immuno-contraception using glycoproteins and proteins derived from eggs and sperm. The logo and symposium proceedings were published by Plenum Press in 1986 as Volume 27, Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology, using the symposium title, J.L. Hedrick, editor.
