UC Davis Graduate and Postdoctoral Education
Most Ph.D. programs are provided by Graduate Groups rather than by departmental programs. A "graduate group" is a group of faculty members whose membership is determined by research and educational interests rather than by departmental affiliation.
Graduate groups recruit students, recommend their admission to graduate study, determine curriucula, provide academic advising, and recommend qualifying examination and dissertation committees. Faculty may belong to more than one group depending on his/her educational and research interests as indicated above with the graduate program affiliation of training grant faculty.
A designated emphasis in Reproductive Biology (DERB, a type of research minor for PhD programs) is offered by several graduate programs. Graduate students may elect the DERB in addition to their major program of student. Information about the DERB may be found at http://gradstudies.ucdavis.edu/continuing/emphasis.htm. Information about graduate programs is available on the Graduate Studies Web site http://gradstudies.ucdavis.edu/programs/progdir.htm .Trainees Predoctoral trainees will be selected from graduate students associated with the trainers laboratories, although an occasional outstanding first-year graduate student, with relevant educational and research interests but not yet committed to a trainer’s laboratory, will be supported. If academic and research progress is satisfactory, predoctoral trainees may be funded for up to three years.
Postdoctoral trainees will normally be nominated for support after they have selected a research mentor from the above list of trainers. Support is normally for one year of research but may be extended for a second year. Postdoctoral trainees are expected to apply for individual fellowships/scholarships during their initial year of support. UC Davis postdoctoral scholars are not associated with graduate programs. However, policies and administrative oversight is the responsibility of Graduate Studies and the Graduate Council. Relevant information is available on the Graduate Studies Web site. http://gradstudies.ucdavis.edu/postdocs/postdocs.htm
Training Activities Trainees will take graduate and training courses, and pursue research and scholarly activities relevant to their subfields of interests in reproductive biology. They will participate in a weekly journal club on reproductive biology during the academic year. They will attend weekly seminars presented by non-UC Davis researchers and scholars. They will participate and present the results of their research efforts in an annual meeting of UC Davis reproductive biologists. They will benefit from the advice and support of multiple mentors by having advisory/dissertation committees (predoctoral trainees) or seeking active mentoring from more than one of the trainers. Collaborative research between trainer laboratories is encouraged.
Trainees will also participate in and present their research at national and selected scientific meetings such as the annual meetings of the American Society of Cell Biology or the Society for Reproductive Biology, and Gordon Research Conferences.
