The Ph.D. degree in Animal Biology has received final campus approval and
is awaiting final UC systemwide approval before students can be officially
admitted (anticipated early Spring 2005). At this point in time, students
interested in pursuing the Ph.D. in Animal Biology may apply to the Animal
Biology M.S. program by January 15th and indicate in a separate e-mail to the
graduate program assistant that they would prefer admission to the Ph.D. when
official admissions are opened. Admissions and funding decisions for the
M.S. program can be made and forwarded to Graduate Studies for final processing
and notification of applicants. The admissions committee will also make
decisions on admissibility to the Ph.D. program and notify prospective students
of those decisions although official admission to the Ph.D. program by
Graduate Studies will not occur until the final official approval of the Ph.D.
program. The Ph.D. in Animal Biology is supervised by the Animal Biology
Graduate Group. This is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary program
reflecting the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary nature of
animal biology. Research interests of mentoring faculty cover a continuum
from basic to applied and include vertebrates and invertebrates.
In general, research is mission-oriented recognizing that practical solutions
require a sound knowledge of the complete biology of the organism, system, and
environment. Over 25 faculty work in disciplines such as behavior,
ecology, genetics, nutrition, and physiology.
The Animal Biology Graduate Group is housed in the Department of Animal
Science. Mentoring faculty are located inside and outside the College of
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
