POSITION DESCRIPTION:
This position will be involved in managing the laboratory and interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in molecular biology, cell biology, and analytical chemistry (proteomics). The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team in a laboratory setting.

Research
The Junior Specialist will be required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities. This will be achieved through general and specific responsibilities. Generally, their role and duty in publishable research activities include participating in field and laboratory studies, fish care and laboratory support (maintaining the lab, organizing lab, and lab supply ordering, safety compliance record management, training record management). Specific responsibilities in publishable research activities include molecular bench work (reverse genetics in cell culture, analytical chemistry, and proteomics including liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, standard cloning and molecular biology tasks), biochemical analyses of tissues samples (protein extraction and proteomics analyses) and data management.

The Junior Specialist will not be required to assist the PI in study design, but will be required to collect and interpret data and to become independent (after receiving training) in everyday laboratory management tasks such as chemical inventory keeping, waste record keeping and disposal management, maintenance of training records, updating safety and compliance tasks, etc.) that are required and critical to support research activities.

Professional Competence
If appropriate (e.g. the Junior Specialist is involved in a project and desires to do so), the Junior Specialist may present work at a scientific or scholarly conference, for example, the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology. If interested, the Junior specialist may participate in –professional societies. The junior specialist will interact with the ANS department EHS coordinator, grant managers, purchasing agents, and with professional staff scientists in the ANS, department to become proficient and professionally competent in pertinent activities.
University and Public Service

The Junior Specialist will participate in training activities, such as mentoring high school and undergraduate interns and training them in molecular, biochemical or physiological techniques and data analysis.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Chemistry with emphasis in Cell and Molecular Biology
  • Ability to maintain chemical inventories and laboratory safety data sheets.
  • Good general organizational and management skills
  • Ability to perform molecular biology work in the lab
  • Skills following research sampling protocol to handle and transport samples, and maintain records from sampling events and laboratory analyses.
  • Knowledge and skills working with LIMS systems, Microsoft suite (Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint) for information outreach, data management, and summation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to work with cell lines and work in sterile environments.
  • Molecular biology experience including reporter assays.
  • Knowledge and skills using RNA and DNA extraction and cloning
  • Experience in working in an academic research lab
  • Ability to maintain laboratory equipment and records.

SALARY RANGE: Step I- $38,112 annual
