Department News and Updates: October 26, 2018

Joy Mench received the Humane Hero Award from the American Humane Association during their annual Gala in Beverly Hills, for her work in improving farm animal welfare. Congratulations!
Macie Muller and Sarah Klopatek were awarded science communication scholarships to attend the Coun-cil for Agriculture Science and Technology (CAST) annual meeting.

Jackson Gross and Nathan Kaufman hosted CAST at the aquaponics facility greenhouse.
The Livestock Judging Team competed in the Western Fall Classic in Medford. OR and at the Big Fresno Fair competition. Megan Canel won high individual in the novice division at Medford. Alia Ames won high individual and the team won high team overall at Fresno.
The Donkey Welfare Symposium is being held on campus this weekend, hosted by the department and UCD School of Veterinary Medicine.
The department is hosting a Sheep Evaluation Workshop on Saturday, November 3rd. This free clinic will give exhibitors a chance to enhance their ability to properly evaluate market lambs and breeding ewes.

Monica Pechanec and Mike Mienaltowski published “Evaluation and Optimization of a Three-Dimensional Construct Model for Equine Superficial Digital Flexor Tendon” in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science.
The Hess Lab donated 25 scales to the Animal Science Department faculty and teaching labs. Thank you, Hess Lab!
Colin Kern, Ying Wang, James Chitwood, Mary Delany, Juan Medrano, Alison Van Eenen-naam, Pablo Ross and Huaijun Zhou published “Genome-wide identification of tissue-specific long non-coding RNA in three farm animal species” in BMC Genomics.

Priya Shukla presented “Climate Justice Through Ocean Science” at the National Gathering of Imagining America in Chicago, Illinois.
Alison Van Eenennaam presented on “Genome Editing Approaches for Livestock —Advancing Animal Health and Welfare” at the Innovation in Agriculture: Women Pioneers at the Frontiers of Science forum at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium and to high school science students at the K.A. Emanuel Hiel High School in Brussels. She also presented on “Gene Editing in Agriculture: Its promises and Pro-spects” in Portugal and Spain, “Communicating Science in a Networked World” to the Collegiate Agricul-ture Leaders (CAL) Conference at UC Davis, “Animal Biotechnology” to the 2018 Fellows of the Cornell Alliance for Science at Cornell University and “The promise of combining advanced reproductive technolo-gies and genomics in cattle breeding programs” at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN.
