- Congratulations Frank! The Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) awarded UC Davis animal scientist Frank Mitloehner the 2019 Borlaug CAST Communication Award in Des Moines, IA on Oct. 16 during the World Food Prize Symposium. Mitloehner, is the 10th recipient of this award and third from the UC Davis Department of Animal Science.
- CLEAR Center brings on associated director for communications -The Clarity and Leadership for Environmental Awareness Research Center has brought on Joe Proudman to lead communications for the Center. Joe joins the Center after seven years in Strategic Communications. The center is also currently searching for a social media specialist. The job posting can be viewed at:
https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/1557447281 - Elizabeth Maga received the Friend of ADGA Award from the American Dairy Goat Association at the annual meeting in Boise, ID for her work on casein genotypes and milk production in goats.
- This past Saturday, October 19th, Horse Day occurred at the Cole Facility and Horse Barn with over 250 people in attendance and was coordinated by Mike Mienaltowski, Kelli Davis, and Dan Sehnert. Topics ranged from breeding, packing, nutrition, hoof care and many others. Other An Sci speakers included Ed DePeters and Monica Pechanek.

OUTREACH & TRAVEL
- Dr. Amy Mclean traveled to Verona Italy to give two talks at the World Equine Veterinary Congress. She presented: "Serum amyloid a in working horses, donkeys, and mules in Morocco" and "Survey of serum omyloid o and pathogen frequency in recently captured feral donkeys".
- Five graduate students from the ABG graduate group got scholarship awards from ARPAS this year. Carlyn Peterson (Ph.D; Mitloehner), Sarah Klopatek (Ph.D.; Oltjen), Ashley Niesen (Ph.D.; Rossow), Randy Edwards (M.S.; Rossow), and Christine Sousa (M.S. Rossow). They presented at the annual Continuing Education Conference of the California Chapter in October at Harris Ranch in Coalinga. California. They all did an excellent job with their presentations.
- Genomic Variation Lab students and staff all attended the American Fisheries Society - Wildlife Society joint meeting in Reno, Nevada from Sept 29-Oct 3. Project scientist Ravi Nagarajan and graduate students Amanda Coen, Aviva Fiske. Ensieh Habibi, Shannon Joslin, and Shannon Kieran all gave oral presentations while graduate students Ann Holmes, Thiago Sanches, and Anna Jordan gave poster presentations. Aviva Fiske was awarded the James Wright Travel Award from the AFS Genetics Section at the meeting as well.
