1930-2002
John Kincheloe was born in Crawford County, Arkansas and attended public schools in Van Buren. In 1945, while in high school, he met the woman he would later marry.
In 1948 John started a 10-year career with the American Can Company in Fort Smith. He took time out in late 1949 to marry his Betty. They moved to Davis, California in 1959 and John was hired by the Department of Animal Husbandry at UC Davis as assistant to Orval Borman, the Dairy Herdsman. After Orval retired, John became the Herdsman, a position later titled animal resource supervisor. He was popular with the students who worked and/or lived at the facility and enjoyed teaching them how to work with dairy cows and calves. He also enjoyed working on the various research trials initiated by a series of Animal Science faculty members and graduate students. In addition to managing the Dairy facility, John was an excellent AI technician; he consistently had high pregnancy rates from his efforts.
When not on campus, John was an avid sportsman, enjoying playing horseshoes and golf, and finding fishing a pleasant relaxation. He belonged to the Yolo Horseshoe Club and the Northern California Horseshoe Association, competing successfully in many tournaments and participating in friendly matches on weekends. As an avid golfer, one highlight was acting as a Marshall at the Bob Hope Desert Classic in Palm Springs for 4 years. He played golf in Davis and in Palm Springs, an area he and his family wintered at for many years.
After John retired from the University in 1990, he continued to live in Davis, but many of the family=s friends were moving to Nevada. Finally, only a few months before he died, he and Betty moved to Sparks, Nevada where he didn=t live to see completed the house they were having built.
